January 2007 l to r: Meredith, Gail, Erin, Pam
I will never think of tapas bars or oil slicks or Spanish pit stops without toilet paper the same after meeting, getting to know, and then laughing hysterically with Gail Guthmiller.
She was hilarious, that Gail.
She was a sweetheart.
She was determined.
She was committed to renewing her life – and she did in amazing ways.
Many of us were sent reeling when we learned that Gail had been killed in an explosion on Monday, August 23, 2010 in her home town of Menno, SD. She’d moved there several years ago to be closer to her family and reconnect with dear friends. We so enjoyed her involvement in the Portland Support Group Meetings – but it was obvious that she was making the right move!

Gail in Italy – May 2008.
Isn’t she beautiful?
I love that she embraced life so fully as a post-op. She was responsible. And she reveled in the liberty. She was a rocking DS’er.
I was just thinking the other day that I needed to phone or email her – I was remembering all of the laughing we had done on our trip to Spain. Gosh, I’m going to miss her. I can’t imagine what her family is going through. Keep them in your prayers, will you?
Bye, friend. You will be deeply missed.
You can see the obituary here: http://www.kostelfuneralhome.com/obits/guthmillergail.html
There are many news stories on the web about this – but a sweet tribute by friends is especially touching here.
I’ll try and get her family’s address so those of you who would like to may send a card to them.
